The US President Barack Obama has sent a personal letter to the North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
The United States is aiming to persuade the communist nation to return to six-country nuclear talks.
The letter was delivered by US Special Representative Stephen Bosworth.
He's just returned from a trip to discuss the de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula with officials there.
Steve Clemons, a Director at the New America Foundation says it makes sense for Obama to communicate directly with Kim.
