The exiled Tibetan leader's visit was strongly opposed by Beijing which said it "seriously undermined" bilateral ties.
The visit comes amid tensions over issues like the approval US sale of arms to Taiwan.
Banning Garrett, the Asia Program Director of the Atlantic Council, says that talk of a new Cold War has been overblown, though clear challenges remain.
He makes a strong appeal for cool-headed leadership on both sides of the Pacific.
